ARENA: DrainWith all of the rain, how is your arena draining? There are three useful types of drains for an arena.1. French drain - best for use around perimeter of arena. A trench backlled with gravel and a perforated pipe to drain water away. 2. Burrito drain - best for use inside the arena. Same as a french drain, but the gravel and pipe are wrapped, like a burrito.3. Dry well - best use at high runo areas. A large hole, like a well, backlled with gravel.Depending on the size of the arena, you will likely need to utilize more than one drain type. Installing a proper drainage system is one of the best ways to improve – or prevent – poor drainage. Before installing your drains, take the time to:• Determine the gradient and ow patterns• Mark trenches• Make an installation plan

BARN: BrushesA properly groomed horse begns with properly cleaned brushes. Here is an easy way to clean your brushes to be more eective and last longer. Cleaning Solution Recipe:1 tbsp Castile Soap3 tbsp Fractionated Coconut Oil15 drops Lavender Fields Essential OilCleaning Instructions:1. Use a curry comb to loosen hair, dirt and oil from the brush. 2. Mix coconut oil, castile soap and essential oils (optional) in a small container or dish.3. Once it’s thoroughly mixed, dip the brush bristles in and allow it to soak for 1-2 minutes. You can also use your hand to work the soap in for a deeper clean. Be careful to not get the handles wet or soapy.4. In a sink or with a hose, hold the brush bristles facing down and gently rinse. 5. Blot with a towel to dry, then place bristles DOWN for several hours.6. Once most of the moisture is gone you can ip them over to nish drying with bristles UP.

TEMPERATURE: Cover UpAn exercise rug, also called a quarter sheet, is a great way to keep your horse comfortable when you’re riding in cold or inclement weather. They are especially appropriate to prevent chills in horses that are always clipped and blanketed. If you clip your horse in winter, using a quarter sheet or exercise rug may be a necessity.Exercise rugs, (known as quarter sheets since they cover a horse’s hindquarters) are also called riding blankets because they’re worn during riding. They come in two basic types to serve dierent purposes:One version is made of a waterproofed material, usually nylon, and shields a horse’s back and hindquarters during wet weather. A water proof quarter sheet is useful to have on hand for special events such as shows, hacking, and trail rides during which your horse may be exposed to the elements. It does not provide excessive warmth, but can make your horse more comfortable if you ride in inclement weather.Another version is made of either a synthetic eece fabric or traditional wool. This type keeps a horse’s back and hind end warm during cold weather workouts. It can be used throughout a ride depending on a combination of the horse’s physical condition, whether he is clipped, how hard he is working, and the temperature. It can also be used just for the warm-up phase of a workout and then replaced at the end of a ride to prevent hot muscles from getting chilled.Exercise rugs vary slightly in style. Some are designed to be placed over the saddle pad but under the saddle; these remain in place during the cold-weather ride. Other versions have hook and loop closures at the front that enable the rider to easily remove the rug after warm-up and then replace it after the workout for the cool-down phase. Some have cutout designs for the rider’s seat, or can be worn over the rider’s thigh as well as the horse’s hindquarters. Exercise rugs come in a variety of colors and can be custom made.

Rain, a downdraft in a vent pipe, or a windy day can be enough to snu out a water heaters pilot light. Relighting instructions are similar for most water heaters, and you can nd them permanently axed to the side of your unit.In order to relight the pilot, remove the access cover to locate control knob. The knob should be in the “Pilot” position. While depressing the control knob, light the pilot light with a long match or wand lighter. Once the pilot ignites, continue holding the knob down for a full minute to bleed air out of the line. (For a water heater with an automatic igniter, the relighting process is virtually the same. Instead of using a lighter or match, though, you’ll push the striker knob repeatedly while depressing the control knob until the pilot ignites.)Relighting the pilot light may or may not be all you need to do to start up your water heater once more. Depending on what happens after the pilot ignites, proceed with one of the following:• If the ame remains lit, you’re good to go!• If the pilot light ickers and goes out soon after relighting, clean the pilot orice.• If you’re able to light the pilot light, but it goes out when you release the control knob, the thermocouple probably needs replacing.Remember, if your water heater is not in use or won’t light, turn o the gas or propane.FIRE: Pilot Light

WATER: MudMud, mud, and more mud. Is there really anything you can do or use to drain or erradicate this seasonal problem? The short answer is yes.The number one reason for mud is improper grading. Improper grading can include low spots and/or not enough slope. This allows for huge puddles that take forever to dry up. No matter what you put on the ground, if improperly graded, it will never work.Another reason is soil compaction. Horses weigh ALOT. They compact the soil and make it hard as a rock when dry. This leaves nowhere for water to go but to stay and make mud. Aerate the ground in the late spring, when ground is dry and rm enough to hold shape. Here are some solutions to x and prevent muddy ground:1. Grade. Add soil, gravel, mulch in the low spots and properly level the ground with a slope.2. Aerate. Poking holes in or pulling plugs, which reduces compaction, allows water to drain.3. Gutters. Install gutters and downspouts to all shelters and buildings to drain water away.4. French Drains. Installing a French Drain allows you to direct the water where you want it.5. Dry Well. Creates a spot for the run-o to go and then soak back into the soil. 6. Dry Creek. Finding a large low spot can become aesthetically pleasing with a lovely rock stream.7. Rain Garden. Plants that love the water will soak it up like sponges and create beautiful focal points.

TRAINING: RainIt is that time of year. It is wet, wet, wet. In California, we have had one storm right after another with record breaking amounts of water falling from the sky. With competition sea-son right around the corner, what do you do? Afterall, competitions don’t stop because it is raining. They go on. And, so should you. Get a great raincoat and go outside. Here are some things you can do, even if the arena is closed.• Ground work• Hack• Pole work• Walk, walk, and walk some more • In hand work, like ground driving, leg yield, shoulder in, transitions• Practice jogging (this comes in helpful for shows and the vet)

HOOF: MeasureHoof boots are useful for training, losing a shoe, and overall support of the hoof in a poten-tial stress situation. Here is how to measure boots.1. Get a proper mustang trim.2. Measure the width of the hoof from the widest points.3. Measure the length from the toe to the heels.4. Refer to sizing chart for Renegade Boots to nd the best t. Here are some inside tips to great performing boots:• Renegade Hoof Boots should not be tted tightly! Without a doubt, experience has shown that a boot which ts loose is more stable than a boot which ts too tight.• As hooves grow longer, they also get wider. Consider your trim schedule and whether or not you should go up one boot size to allow for said growth.• Length cutbacks are an option. Cutback Option (Classic model only), which shortens the boot base up to 3/8”. The Renegade Hoof Boot is manufactured in the United States by Lander Industries Inc. and represents the leading edge of hoof boot technology available today. As a complete sub-stitute for the traditional nailed on iron shoe, the Renegade Hoof Boot oers the horse and owner a safer, more natural, and more comfortable lifestyle. To be used only as needed while on a casual trail ride or competitive endurance race, the Renegade Hoof Boot is an easy to use, high performance hoof boot that will take you to the nish line with condence.

NUTRITION: Omega 3There are only two fatty acids that are called “essential,” meaning that they absolutely must be in the diet every day because the horse’s body cannot produce them. The rst essential fatty acid is an omega 6, known as linoleic acid (LA) and the other is an omega 3, known as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).Both have specic roles, however, omega 3s, in particular, are involved in functions such as:• protecting the blood vessels, heart, lungs, digestive tract, bones, and joints.• creating hormonal balance, including assisting with insulin resistance.• promoting a healthy immune response and protection against allergies and skin problems.• protecting the brain against inammatory conditions, most notably PPID (Cushing’s dis-ease) and leptin resistance.Organically grown feed has a lower detectable level of pesticides and herbicides. Exposure to these chemicals, especially over time, can be detrimental to your horse’s heath. Interestingly, nutrients such as antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids are more plentiful in organic plants because they aren’t oxidized by commercial chemicals.COMING SOON! TRAILER: BedroomLiving quarters in trailers are small. Therefore, it is important for our comfort, rest, and re-laxation to have spaces designed, delineated and ecient. For the bedroom, here are some tips to get it designed right.• Sustainable and natural bedding: invest in a great natural material mattress like wool and natural latex.• Cotton or linen sheets• Down or wool for pillows and blankets• For privacy: to close o the space. Install appropriate window coverings or drapes.• Make your space yours by adding dimmable lights, reading lights and a nightstand. Think about your space and a plan place for everything you enjoy for rest.

The locals call him “Zorro” and he roams free in the Pine Nut mountains in Nevada. Many moons ago, on a Mother’s Day, my husband gifted me with a trip to the mountains to search for wild horses. It became a tradition and now every year we choose a dierent range to visit on that special day. This photograph was captured during my very rst encounter with a wild stallion - an en-counter that would change our lives forever. “The Mark of “Zorro” is a part of the American Wild Collection. For more wild horse images visit www.MariaMarriott.com.Best,WILD WEST: The Mark of Zorro
