ARENA: MaintenanceWhether you have an indoor or an outdoor arena, proper maintenance ensures that the footing in your arena remains exible and ready to absorb the impact of horses’ hooves during training or events. Maintenance also keeps ies down by removing manure, and keeps dust to a minimum. Depending on whether you have an indoor or an outdoor arena, and the amount of trac it receives, you may need to perform these tasks daily, weekly, or monthly.Maintenance Checklist:• Remove manure regularly by using a pitchfork and wheelbarrow. Use a wide-tined fork to scoop up manure, and shake the fork so that footing falls back to the arena oor.• Drag the arena surface to keep it groomed and smooth. • Water the arena surface to keep dust to a minimum. • Laser grade or grade the surface to keep it at the proper level to ensure that water runs away from the center of the arena instead of creating standing pools of water.• Check the depth of the footing periodically. Overzealous grading, a heavy rainstorm or moving heavy equipment over an arena can remove or compact the footing. You may need to add more footing material over time, especially if water runo is a problem. Adding a barrier around the perimeter of the arena can prevent erosion in some cases.Proper footing not only looks better, it helps prevent injuries to your horses’ joints, ligaments, tendons and hooves. Keeping your arena groomed and the footing in good repair is an important facilities maintenance task for the health and well-being of the horses in your care.

TEMPERATURE: PlantsTrees and other plants help cool the environment, making vegetation a simple and eective way to reduce heat.The most obvious way trees cool the air is by shading. Reducing the amount of sunlight striking buildings and pavement reduces the amount of energy that is absorbed and re-radiated into the air. Trees also cool the air by a process known as transpiration cooling. As trees release water into the atmosphere from their leaves via transpiration, the surrounding air is cooled as water goes from liquid to a vapor. This process is similar to evaporation pads used to cool greenhouses — except in trees, water moves into the tree’s roots from the soil and travels through the tree’s water-conducting system, eventually being transpired from the leaves. The water that is released in its gas-vapor-form has a cooling eect on the surrounding air. Shaded surfaces, for example, may be 20–45°F cooler than the peak temperatures of unshaded materials. Transpiration cooling, alone or in combination with shading, can help reduce peak summer temperatures by 2–9°F.Trees and vegetation are most useful when planted in strategic locations around buildings or to shade pavement in parking lots and on streets. Researchers have found that planting deciduous trees or vines to the west is typically most eective for cooling a building, especially if they shade windows and part of the building’s roof.
Firebreaks are strips of bare soil or re retarding vegetation meant to stop or control re.Here are some tips and thoughts to install a rebreak:• When possible take advantage of natural or man-made barriers such as roads, ponds, etc.• Firebreaks may be temporary or permanent and can be re-resistant vegetation, non-ammable materials, bare ground, or a combination of these.• Make sure the rebreaks are of an adequate width. Usually a 10 ft. wide strip can stop creeping, ground res.• Take steps to avoid creating unwanted soil erosion.• Make it beautiful and useful, like a hack trail or an allée. For example, Italian Cypress is noted as one of the most re resistant trees.The major costs involved may include:• Clearing the rebreak strip• Blading, disking or plowing a rebreak• Hand tools to control vegetation• Hauling controlled vegetation• Mowing• LaborRemember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. WATER: Grounding A properly working electric fence is a safe way to create enforceable boundaries for your hores. An electric fence, properly installed and functioning, is a great way to keep your horses safe from themselves and others. But, what does water have to do with grounding an electric fence? This time of year, the ground is dry...very dry. The grounding of an electric fence is what actual carries the current through the fence. Without water in the ground, the grounding rod will not work. Thus, your electric fence is dead.Here are some ways to x your grounding:• Water your grounding rod like you would a plant.• Install more grounding rods.• Install deeper grounding rods (6+ feet deep).• Install 3 feet of grounding rod per joule produced by your energizer (joules will be listed on your energizer).• Do not install ground rods within 50 feet of a utility ground rod, buried telephone line or buried metal water line, as they may pick up stray voltage.

FOOD: Grilled Oysters with Citrus and Brightland Olive Oil INGREDIENTS:12 fresh oysters1 tbsps lemon zest1 tbsp lime zest2 tbsp chopped parsley2 cloves chopped garlic1 tsp salt1/4 cup lemon juice1/4 cup lime juice1/4 cup Brightland Ardor Extra Virgin Olive OilDIRECTIONS:To make the gremolata:1. In a bowl combine the lemon zest, lime zest, lemon juice, lime juice, olive oil, garlic, parsley and salt. 2. Mix well and taste for seasoning. Adjust as necessary.3. Reserve for later. To prepare the oysters:1. Preheat your grill until it is very hot, if using charcoal wait until the briquettes have a uni-form grey coating around them. 2. Carefully shuck the oysters, keep the top shell for grilling the oysters.3. Place the oysters on the grill with the top shell covering them. Cook the oysters until you see small bubbles of liquid/steam escaping from the side of the shell.4. Remove the oysters from the grill. Remove the top shell, carefully spoon the gremolata over the oysters. 5. Enjoy immediately!
